We at Don Robinson Mitsubishi believe that St. Cloud is a wonderful place to live and work, but everyone needs a vacation, right? If you’re planning on loading up your Mitsubishi Outlander or Outlander Sport this summer for a family road trip but don’t know where to go, consider a few of these ideas:

  • Louis, Missouri: The city with the famed Arch offers a lot to do, including the City Museum. It’s a 10-hour drive from St. Cloud, meaning you can make it there in a just a day’s drive.
  • Sandusky, Ohio: Sandusky is known for having what is arguably the world’s best roller coaster haven: Cedar Point. A 12-hour drive from St. Cloud is all that is between you and a couple of days riding coasters on the beach. Make it a theme park trip, and drive another 4 hours to experience Ohio’s Kings Island near Cincinnati.
  • Denver, Colorado: The city of Denver has plenty to offer culturally, and it’s just a 13-and-a-half-hour drive. If you switch off with your spouse, you’ll be able to make it to the Mile High City in your Mitsubishi SUV in just one day.
  • Chicago, Illinois: The Windy City is the closest option on this list, but perhaps offers the most to do, whether you’d like to spend time on the beach or explore downtown. You and your family can be there in just a 7-hour drive from St. Cloud.

Be sure to bring your Mitsubishi in for routine maintenance at Don Robinson Mitsubishi before any road trip this summer.

When most new vehicles leave the assembly line, they have been outfitted with all-season tires. For many drivers, these tires are more than enough to get vehicles through all four seasons just fine. However, if you live in a particularly snowy part of the country, you might be considering winter tires. How do you know if they’re right for you?

“Do I Need Winter Tires?” Here’s What They Offer…

All-season tires are designed to make sure you can drive well in the summer and in the winter. To do so, however, they must sacrifice some of the more extreme benefits of tires that do well specifically in hotter or colder climates. Here are some of the benefits of winter tires that all-season tires must give up:

  • Tread rubber on winter tires is designed to remain flexible, which allows the tires to grip the road, even when there is little traction.
  • Traction is also improved through more “biting edges,” which are small slits in the tread that allow the tires to grip better.
  • Deeper tread depths, as well as customized tread patterns, also work to give drivers better traction in snow and on the ice.

If you live in an area that sees a fair amount of snow in the winter, such as here in St. Cloud where we see nearly 50 inches of average snowfall, then you’ll want to consider winter tires for the snow.

last production lancer evolution

We were all heartbroken when we learned that Mitsubishi was ending production of the Lancer Evolution permanently. However, there is a silver lining. Mitsubishi has auctioned off the last production Lancer Evolution to raise money for charity.

The Final Edition Evo is powered by a turbocharged DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine rated at 303 horsepower—the most powerful mass-produced Evolution ever built.

Mitsubishi only produced 1,600 of its Final Edition Evolution model and the US1600 car went to the online auction block on eBay. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Feeding America Riverside & San Bernardino and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

Over the course of seven days, 15 bidders from across the country battled it out to keep the highest bid. In the end, the Final Edition sold for $76,400.

Nicole Suydam, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, said, “Too many people in our community are forced to make hard choices between rent and food, or medicine and food. Mitsubishi’s auction of the final Lancer Evolution will make a big difference in the lives of so many men, women and children who look to us for support every day. We are very grateful for their generosity.”

Here at Don Robinson Mitsubishi, we are sad to see the Lancer Evolution go, but are proud to see Mitsubishi donate this iconic vehicle to such a great cause.

fuel economy on road trips

One of the biggest stresses of taking a long road trip is how much you need to put aside for gas, and how often you’ll have to stop. If you follow these tips on getting better fuel economy on road trips, you’re sure to make fewer stops at the pump and have more a little more pocket change.

The best thing you can do to save gas is to drive slower and more cautiously. It can be hard to do this, especially when you’re trying to get to your vacation destination, but going 65 instead of 70 will optimize your fuel use. Coasting more often instead of slamming on the brakes also helps, since braking and accelerating uses a ton of fuel.

If at all possible, try to avoid heavy traffic times and areas. Download an app with real-time traffic updates and see if you can take alternate routes. When you’re idling in a traffic jam, you’re getting zero miles per gallon.

Pack as light as possible. Don’t bring a bunch of extra stuff you don’t need, because the heavier your car is, the more fuel you’ll use. Make sure your tires are properly inflated before you leave! Under Inflated tires make your car work harder.

Finally, turn the air conditioning on as low as you can stand and roll the windows up on the freeway. The drag can really hurt your fuel economy.

Mitsubishi Night Drive campaign

On the heels of Ford’s first-ever mobile Escape the Room game in the 2017 Ford Escape, Mitsubishi too is trying to hook young drivers through innovative test driving programs. Mitsubishi has launched “Night Drive,” a campaign that invites drivers to virtually test drive the new Mirage G4.

The website turns the user’s smartphone into a steering wheel and lets gives them feel like they’re driving the car from home. Mitsubishi says their target audience with the affordable, feature-packed Mirage G4 is young buyers, who are more environmentally conscious when it comes to fuel use and want smaller cars they can easily drive in cities.

The Mitsubishi Night Drive campaign asks testers to use both their smartphone and laptop to test specific features in the Mitsubishi Mirage G4. Tapping the gas pedal button on your smartphone starts a demonstration of the Hill Start Assist feature that helps the car move up a steep incline.

Mitsubishi says this program is a “new marketing launch for us” and that this could be a smart alternative to trying to get buyers to the dealership for initial test driving. This way, buyers can experience the car from their homes and get an idea of what they want, making them more likely to come to the dealership.

Hologram

Mitsubishi recently developed a new display system capable of projecting a 56-inch image that they can actually pass through. You heard right. This holographic technology introduces a completely unique display system that may have interesting implications in the auto industry should the brand choose to implement the technology.

According to Japan Today, the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation developed the Mitsubishi Floating Display that can be used for things like digital signage, amusements, and guide signs. Although some companies have developed holograph-like technologies, this system lets you actually pass through it and penetrate it.

“There have already been displays that can show an image above a table-like device,” said technology writer Naoki Tanaka. “And, in demonstrations, images displayed by those displays were touched and penetrated through by a hand. However, because of the table-like device right below the image, it was not possible for a human to walk through the image.”

The key to this system is its complex optical system. Images are displayed in front of a half mirror (beam splitter) in midair. That means that individuals can approach images, and possibly interact with videos and virtual reality systems. Although Mitsubishi Electric is a distinct entity from Mitsubishi Motors, the brand may explore innovative technologies sometime in the future. This projector technology is set to be available commercially by 2020.

Mitsubishi Mirage

2015 Mitsubishi Mirage

The IHS Model Loyalty Award for the Non-Luxury Traditional Sub-Compact segment was given to the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage for the second year in a row.

IHS Automotive makes a list each year the vehicles that have the highest model loyalty, which is determined by number of households that purchase or lease a second vehicle of the same model. Once again, the Mitsubishi Mirage has been one vehicle that brings its customers back for more.

The award highlights the affordability and desirable features of the Mirage, which has been called the most affordable car to drive on the market thanks to its combination of low price, high fuel economy, and exceptional powertrain warranty. As Don Swearingen, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, said, the Mirage is “one of the true hidden gems in the automotive industry.”  We would have to agree here at Don Robinson Mitsubishi!

The Mirage will be updated in 2017 to include more features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and will remain one of the most affordable cars on the market. The announcement of the new Mirage came soon after reports of a 30% increase in sales from 2014 to 2015.  We look forward to seeing what else the Mirage will bring to the table in future generations!

2016 Mitsubishi Model Lineup

Mitsubishi has been in the U.S. since 1982, and although there have been some rough patches; it appears that Mitsubishi is standing strong in the U.S.  Mitsubishi announced on December 26th, 2015 that the company has sold a total of Five Million Mitsubishi Cars in the U.S.  That’s an average of about 15,000 cars a year!

Since first appearing in the United States, Mitsubishi had brought many great vehicles to us including the Galant, Montero, and one of our personal favorites, the Mitsubishi Eclipse.  Also, we can’t forget the recently retired model the Lancer Evolution.  In addition to these great past models, Mitsubishi has great things to come for the brand including the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a hybrid model, and other 2016 models currently available, such as the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, i-MiEV and Lancer.

In addition to selling over 5 Million cars, Mitsubishi has continually increased sales the last few months.  By the last few months, I mean the last 21 months of consecutive increases over the previous year.  It is clear that Mitsubishi is finding a permanent home in the U.S. and that the brand is attracting loyal followers that look forward to see what is next!

Here at Don Robinson Mitsubishi, we couldn’t be more excited to see what the next great thing for Mitsubishi is!  Until then, stop by and see our great stock of 2016 Mitsubishi models!

As smartphones become increasingly important to our daily lives, choosing a vehicle sometimes means having to switch from your preferred platform. Other times it means passing on a vehicle that you really love. With the new 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage changes, you won’t have to do either!

As if the car wasn’t already versatile enough, it was just announced that the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage will feature both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto.  These features and much more will make the affordable small sedan more luxurious than ever before!

Both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto offer fantastic capability. Android Auto features a well-organized interface that allows for intuitive interaction. Apple CarPlay gives iPhone users that same super easy-to-use display they are used to.

The changes on the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage go way beyond the addition of Apple CarPlay. In particular, the Mirage is better looking than ever with the introduction of a new hood, grille and lighting system. There’s also an option for a Rockford-Fosgate audio system and no matter whether you’re an Apple or an Android person, the music coming through those speakers is going to sound amazing!
